《陋室铭》英译
Ode to My Humble Dwelling

Translated by Tongchuan Li
Mountains need not height to be known, if fairies dwell within.
Waters need not depth to be charmed, if dragons lurk beneath.
Although my dwelling is humble, my virtues bring it fame.
Verdant are the stone steps covered in moss;
Emerald is the grass that catches my eyes.
I entertain only great scholars, none unlearned.
I play my zither and read the scriptures, free from cacophonous strings and mundane paperwork.
Like Zhuge’s hut of NanYang, and Ziyun’s simple pavilion in XiShu,
To quote Confucius, “How can it be humble?”

山不在高，有仙则名。水不在深，有龙则灵。斯是陋室，惟吾德馨。苔痕上阶绿，草色入帘青。谈笑有鸿儒，往来无白丁。可以调素琴，阅金经。无丝竹之乱耳，无案牍之劳形。南阳诸葛庐，西蜀子云亭。孔子云：“何陋之有？”
【注】刘禹锡（772年~842年），字梦得，籍贯河南洛阳，生于郑州荥阳。唐朝中期的大臣、文学家、哲学家，有“诗豪”之称。《陋室铭》是刘禹锡创作的一篇托物言志骈体铭文。全文仅81字，作者借赞美陋室抒写自己志行高洁，安贫乐道，不与世俗同流合污的意趣。文中渲染陋室不陋的高雅境界，并引古代贤杰之居与圣人之言强化文意，以反问作结，余韵悠长。
